Somewhere in the foothills of Italy is nestled Cantine San Marzano, and from its loins comes the range of Il Pumo Wines. Il Pumo wines are all classified as Protected Geographical Indication which means that they are 100% regionally made in Italy. All of San Marzano's wines begin in the thin, rocky soil of Puglia, Salento, and San Marzano at about 100 meters above sea level.
Stored and aged in steel tanks, these wines are not all the same. Each one has a slightly different harvest time and method of production, making each variant fresh and unique. As a result, this range of wines is wide and each serves its own purpose when dining.
What's in a name?
For a beginner, it can be difficult to sort out what's what in the name of a wine, especially an Italian wine. As a general rule, the wines names start with the producer or the range of wines, then the types of grapes used, the region they were grown in, and of course the vintage year is what year the grapes were grown and harvested.
Therefore, Il Pumo's Negroamara Salento is a wine produced by Il Pumo from Negroamara grapes in the Salento region. The name may include words like rosso or spumante, (meaning red and sparkling respectively) to further describe the wine.

Again, each wine has its own unique methods and therefore serves a different purpose with a particular meal.
Il Pumo Sauvignon Malvasia Salento IGP is a white wine made from Sauvignon and Malvasia grapes harvested in mid-August. Wine tasters describe it as having Scotch Broom notes and being citrusy on the nose. It compliments light pasta sauces and fish soups as well as young cheese and appetizers.
Rosso Salento IGP is a full bodied wine that has red fruit notes and is wide on the nose. This wine comes from a variety of red grapes that are harvested in the second half of September and fermented with yeast. This red wine goes well with salami and sliced meats with aged cheeses.
Il Pumo Negroamaro Salento IGP is another fine red wine, although this is one is better served with beef and game. It is described as spicy with an intense aroma, and as having scents of vanilla and rosemary. These grapes are harvested during the first week of September and only Negroamara grapes are used.
Il Pumo Primativo Salento IGP is similar to its sister Negroamara. It is a red made only from Primativo grapes and is also harvested in early September. This deep ruby red classic is full bodied and well balanced, making it easy to drink. Serve this wine with red meat and game courses.
