Tinpot Hut Sauvignon Blanc 2015
Tinpot Hut’s owner and winemaker Fiona Turner began developing her Blind River “Home Block” vineyard in Marlborough’s Awatere Valley with husband Hamish. It was here that she first created the Tinpot Hut Sauvignon Blanc and many of the other award winning wines that she produces.
This all started in 2005 and now that the vineyards are fully mature Fiona can blend the main varietals of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Riesling with parcels of selected other varietals from selected sub regions of Marlborough. Blind River Gruner Veltliner and Hawkes Bay Syrah are two examples of this.
The vineyard was originally part of a large sheep farming station and Fiona has named the range of wines after the historic “Tinpot Hut”, a Marlborough landmark frequented by local high country musterers.
The vineyards of Home Block are dry and sunny yet they have a cool climate which accentuates fresh, vibrant and aromatic intensity with a distinct mineral complexity to the wines.
The flavours of the Tinpot Hut Sauvignon Blanc 2015 are a sublime mixture of tropical fruit and herbaceous spice. The tropical fruit is a a combination of blackcurrant, lemongrass and fresh thyme adding the herbal spice. This remarkable wine has a distinctive mineral palate and is one that anyone can return to again and again. It bucks the trend of the NZ Fruit Bomb which is so prevalent in many Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc’s these days.
I first came across this remarkable wine after I had purchased a glass for my wife in an overpriced restaurant in London. The look of delight and her insistence that I would source this wine even if only for her pleasure made me realise I had to get some for my customers.
I now recommend the Tinpot Hut Sauvignon as a great alternative to the Faultline Sauvignon Blanc and the Bishops Leap Sauvignon Blanc. These are two of my best selling Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs but the Tinpot Hut offers a difference that is enough to keep the customer happy.
And it’s not just my wife and I who love this wine. Here are a few comments from others….
“That teams of highly attuned sommeliers keep on picking it out for Gold, blind, year after year, vintage after vintage is a truly remarkable testament to the vineyards and the winemaker” - Sommelier Wine Awards UK
“Love your wine, always have some in my cellar” - Jamie Oliver, Chef & Restauranteur
So why not treat yourself to a bottle of case of this superb wine. Don’t just take my word for it, trust me and countless others when i say one glass and you will be back for case after case, it’s that good.
