Weingut Rabl and their delicious Grüner Veltliners

If you want to enhance your wine experience of Austrian wines, then probably it is the best way to start alongside with the Rabl Family Winery. They have a long history of winemaking in the region of Kamptal and their wines are affordable for every budget. And what’s better than start with the most popular grape variety (for a reason) in the country, the Grüner Veltliner! Luckily they have a great selection of varietal wines starting with the entry levels through the Vinum Optimum selection until the Prädikat wines, the sweetest dessert wines you can find in that quality level. But first let’s get to know better the Winery itself!

The vineyards of Käferberg

Their history goes back as far as the 1700’s when mixed agriculture has been practised there since 1750. Which means the part of the stone-vaulted cellar they own today is over 300 years old. In the 1900’s they were already selling wines from wooden barrels to local guesthouses and in 1946 they started to bottle them in 0,7 litre bottles for selling. They were one of the first for paying attention to single vineyard wines and bottled them accordingly mainly Rieslings and Grüner Veltliners from Käferberg from different vineyards.

The 300 years old cellar

Today, Rudolf Rabl is managing the winery with all its aspect who joined in 1968 with his son, Rudolf Rabl junior who was the one started to increase the vineyard area from 20 hectares to 75 hectares. Together they started a successfull business and won some very prestigious awards like in 2004 the award “Best Austrian Winery” at the “Vinitaly” in Verona or in 2006, the “Decanter Worldwineaward” Decanter trophy for the best white wine in the world with the Grüner Veltliner Käferberg of 2004!

But this is not a surprise with such conditions in the vineyard, which composed of acient rock formations as well as loess areas with clay. This will give juices what they qualify wines labelled “Vinum Optimum“ mostly made from Riesling, Grüner Veltliner and Zweigelt but there is occasionally some Merlot, Pinot Noir, Gelber Muskateller or Sauvignon Blanc. These wines will show the true characteristic of the place, the best places in Kamptal and next to them there are some single vineyard varietal wines and of course the lusciously sweet Prädikat wines, the supersweet, made of noble rotted or frozen grapes of Riesling and Grüner Veltliner for desserts.

Some of these wine can be kept in the cellar for a very long time!

In the wine cellar as I mentioned part of it is already 300 years old, they making the wines as naturally as possible which means they support spontanious fermentation and longer must contact and it will give the wine more complexity and structure with a creamy mouthfeel when we taste. This is the secret behind all that awards they have because the importance of nature comes first as the familiy tradition shows.

Fully ripen bunches of Grüner Veltliner

Like everywhere in Austria, the main production is white wines such as the most planted grape variety in the country, Grüner Veltliner. This wines have beautiful flavours of ripe fruits like apples, peaches and oranges with white pepper and because of the long must contact, the fruit pulp and peel release more extracts and flavours. It has a pleasant acidity, medium alcohol and a long finish.

Frozen grapes for Eiswein production

If you are more interested in the sweet wines of Austria, here you will find some amazing Grüner Veltliners as Eiswein with similar fruit aromas topped up with honeysuckle and camomile with much more complexity and ageing potential.
