Winemakers Reserve Viognier 2019 from Berton Vineyards

The delicious Winemakers Reserve Viognier from Bob Berton is a fresh and citrusy wine with discreet aromas of nectarine and peach, complemented by floral nuances of Jasmine. Delicious with Thai food and traditional vegan dishes.

Established by Bob and Cherie Berton in May 1996, Berton Vineyard is one of Hallgarten's most important partners. The estate covers 30 hectares of land located on gently rolling hills at 450 metres above sea level, in a subregion of Eden Valley in South Australia. The superb Reserve Shiraz and Reserve Chardonnay wines are still sourced from this plot. In 2007, Bob purchased the Yenda winery in the heart of the Riverina. This state-of-the-art facility has the capacity to process 20,000 tonnes and enables Berton Vineyard to produce value for money wines that sit alongside their premium single-vineyard offerings.

Vintage - The Winemakers Reserve Viognier 2017 vintage saw high winter rainfall, which led into the growing season and provided good soil moisture. Cool temperatures during spring and summer delayed the vintage in some blocks by up to four weeks. High rainfall in November provided some early disease pressure, however, the vines kept under control such as these Viognier blocks resulted in good, concentrated fruit flavours.

Vineyard - The grapes come from Riverina vineyards surrounding the townships of Griffith and Yenda. The vines are grown in a warm continental climate with mostly dry ripening periods, which provide excellent conditions for grape cultivation. Deep, fertile loam soils provide a great base for healthy vines and grapes with an abundance of flavour. Efficient irrigation methods supply water from the Murrumbidgee River in gravity-fed channel systems. The Viognier blocks are set up on a double wire trellis, allowing good air penetration and bunch distribution, whilst providing protection from sunburn. This system also allows good machinery and manual access during pruning, spraying and harvest. Winemaking Harvested in the cool of the night in retaining freshness and minimising oxidation, the fruit was immediately pressed. The juice was clarified before a slow fermentation at cool temperatures of 14 to 16°C. A six to eight-week maturation on yeast lees built mid-palate weight and aided the expression of soft creamy notes. The wine was stabilised, blended and filtered prior to bottling. The wine was matured in bottle for a further four months.

Tasting Note - This alluring Winemakers Reserve Viognier displays lifted aromas of nectarine and peach, complemented by floral nuances of jasmine and orange blossom. Flavours intensify on the palate with soft fleshy mandarin and marmalade fruit coming to the fore. The wine finishes with moderate length and hints of baked apple and spice.

Serving Suggestion - Delicious with battered fresh fish and chips, prawns, scallops or creamy pasta.

Can you explain your shipping charges?

We charge the amount the courier charges us to deliver the wines. In the majority of cases this is £10.00 for a dozen wines. For local delivery we charge £5.00 as we can often do this ourselves, by local we mean Milton Keynes.

Couriers charge by weight and size and a case of wines is both heavy and bulky and so the costs are fairly high. The charges are the same if you are buying 1 bottle or 6 bottles but they change if you go over 6 bottles due the the excess weight and size. Couriers also charge a fee to cover fuel excess and this all goes towards the total cost not to mention the 20% VAT to be added to everything.

Currently if someone orders a dozen wines they are charged £10.00 but if they order 24 bottles the charge is the same!

If you wish to have your wines shipped to other countries the costs are extreemly high and often not worth paying for. The cost for example to ship to the USA for a dozen wines would be £100.00 for the shipping alone! Therefore we have taken the decision not to ship any wines outside of the UK.

What is your minimum order?

The minimum order is 1 bottle! I prefer it if people order more and you get better value with the delivery if you do this too!

What if I want to send wine as a gift?

No problem, we will send to your preferred address and even include a card free of charge!

We have two kinds of cards a blank one and a Thank you one. However if you want a Valentines one or a birthday card or anyother type of card please let us know. We will write your personal greeting and even include the soppy stuff. We don't charge for the cards as its our way of thanking you for choosing us to send a gift to your loved one.

What about a discount?

I may be able to take a little off the price if you ask nicely and there is a large enough order. Please do not ask for a discount on any orders under 12 bottles.  Email me with your requirements and I will let you know if I can do anything. However the best way to get a discount is to sign up for the newsletter as there is often special offers given away to newsletter subscribers.
