San Marzano II Pumo Salice Salentino 2020
The Il Pumo Salice Salentino is a superb blend of two of Puglia's wonderful red grape varieties, Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera. They have managed to produce an outstanding value for money wine that combines spice, cherry, plum and herb characters into a silky soft red wine. Whilst many people will not have heard of these grapes please believe me once you have tried this red wine you will be back to buy more.
In 1962, 19 vine growers from San Marzano, whose families had farmed the land for generations, combined their efforts to establish 'Cantine San Marzano'. Through the decades this cooperative has grown significantly, attracting over 1200 vine growers, using modern and technologically advanced plants and producing elegant wines without forgetting the obligation to the ancient Apulian wine traditions. Nowadays the melding of time-honoured tradition, passion and sensibility with contemporary techniques enables this winery to produce wines with distinctive varietals and regional characters, marvellously reflecting individual attention, seasonal variation and local terroir.
Vineyard
The soil is mainly composed of clay with a depth that reaches up to one metre.
Winemaking
The grapes were harvested during the second half of September. The must went through a thermo-controlled maceration for approximately ten days, followed by the alcoholic fermentation with selected yeasts. The wine was aged in stainless steel tanks.
Tasting Note
A deep ruby red wine with an intense bouquet of cherry, plum and spicy notes combined with a hint of Mediterranean herbs. Full-bodied with a pleasantly fresh finish.
