Vitese Nero D'Avola from the Columba Bianco Co-operative

A delightful wine with rich, juicy flavours of fleshy plum and black cherries interlaced with subtle sweet spice and liquorice notes backed by a spicy finish.

Producer Note - Established in 1970, Colomba Bianca is the largest Sicilian grower cooperative and the biggest Italian producer of organic wine, with more than 1,800 hectares dedicated to organically farmed vines. Colomba Bianca also has a further 7,500 hectares of vineyard, growing indigenous and international varieties. Despite their size, they engage a philosophy of micro-viticulture and micro-winemaking to ensure the ultimate precision, quality and expression of terroir. The stunning range of single variety and innovative blends are tailor-made under the watchful eye of head winemaker Mattia Filippi. Dynamic and passionate, the Cantine is constantly evolving with investments in the vineyards and in the technology of their five specialist wineries. With their sights firmly fixed on the future of Sicilian wine, Colomba Bianca is rapidly becoming one of the leading names in organic winemaking in Italy.

Vintage - In 2018, the thermal trends that characterised the summer in Sicily brought about great freshness, which carried through into the wines. Favourable climatic conditions enabled the grapes to reach full maturity and as a result, the wines are bright and vibrant.

Vineyard - Nero d'Avola has long been the most important grape on the island of Sicily, thriving in the heat of the Mediterranean sunshine. Here in these sun-drenched vineyards, the highest standards are attained through the use of innovative technology and the careful process of mapping the terroir according to the weather patterns, harvesting time, soils and vine age. The vineyards are made up of distinct soil and climate conditions and range from sea level up to 700 metres above sea level, each terroir imparting subtle complexity into the wine. The grapes undergo a sensory analysis and are hand-picked at optimum maturity. The grapes are harvested into 20-kilogram containers, to prevent them from being prematurely crushed.

Winemaking - The manual harvest took place between the end of August and the beginning of September. The grapes were macerated on their skins, at low temperatures, for 48 hours, in order to extract sweet and delicate tannins and colour. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures of approximately 20°C and lasted for 12 days, followed by five months in stainless steel tanks to retain the purity of fruit.

Tasting Note - A brilliant, deep red Nero d'Avola with rich, juicy flavours of ripe plum and black cherries interlaced with subtle violet notes. Concentrated on the palate, the deep fruit flavours are supported by soft, ripe tannins and a spicy character on the finish.

Can you explain your shipping charges?

We charge the amount the courier charges us to deliver the wines. In the majority of cases this is £10.00 for a dozen wines. For local delivery we charge £5.00 as we can often do this ourselves, by local we mean Milton Keynes.

Couriers charge by weight and size and a case of wines is both heavy and bulky and so the costs are fairly high. The charges are the same if you are buying 1 bottle or 6 bottles but they change if you go over 6 bottles due the the excess weight and size. Couriers also charge a fee to cover fuel excess and this all goes towards the total cost not to mention the 20% VAT to be added to everything.

Currently if someone orders a dozen wines they are charged £10.00 but if they order 24 bottles the charge is the same!

If you wish to have your wines shipped to other countries the costs are extreemly high and often not worth paying for. The cost for example to ship to the USA for a dozen wines would be £100.00 for the shipping alone! Therefore we have taken the decision not to ship any wines outside of the UK.

What is your minimum order?

The minimum order is 1 bottle! I prefer it if people order more and you get better value with the delivery if you do this too!

What if I want to send wine as a gift?

No problem, we will send to your preferred address and even include a card free of charge!

We have two kinds of cards a blank one and a Thank you one. However if you want a Valentines one or a birthday card or anyother type of card please let us know. We will write your personal greeting and even include the soppy stuff. We don't charge for the cards as its our way of thanking you for choosing us to send a gift to your loved one.

What about a discount?

I may be able to take a little off the price if you ask nicely and there is a large enough order. Please do not ask for a discount on any orders under 12 bottles.  Email me with your requirements and I will let you know if I can do anything. However the best way to get a discount is to sign up for the newsletter as there is often special offers given away to newsletter subscribers.
