Lake Breeze Bernoota Shiraz Cabernet 2013
The Bernoota Shiraz Cabernet from Lake Breeze wines is a superb blend of two of Australia's most prominent red wine varietals. This rich and voloptuous red wine is the perfect match for a juicy steak, sunday roast or a good cheese board.
Lake Breeze winemaker Greg Follett is part of the 4th generation of Folletts to work on the family property, which has been in the grape growing business in Langhorne Creek for 120 years. Only in the past 25 years have they been making wine, and have rapidly built an enviable reputation for consistently producing outstanding wines. Greg uses exclusively old vine fruit (and the best 30 per cent of that) resulting in wines that are concentrated and rich. He takes a 'hands on' approach, responsible for all facets of the business, from fruit selection through to sales and marketing.
Vineyard
The average age of the vines is 37 years, with the youngest vines being 24 years old and the oldest at 45 years old. All the vines are on their own roots and the soils are generally alluvial sandy loams with some over a claybase.
Winemaking.
Fruit selection is paramount with only the best blocks are retained for the Lake Breeze label and only the best rows of these blocks on a lot of occasions. Small open static tanks were used for the fermentation which took place on the skins for seven to 12 days. The wine was then pressed straight to oak barriques to complete fermentation, followed by 20 months maturation in these barrels. A mixture of new and older American and French oak barrels were used. The individual components were kept separately for 15 months before blending. The wine was not fined or filtered, prior to bottling.
Tasting Note
A hugely successful wine on the show system, Shiraz / Cabernet is a blend that Australia celebrates. This 60/40 blend is classically rich, voluptous and juicy blend of cassis, blueberries liquorice and fresh black pepper.
