Swartland Winery Bush Vines Chenin Blanc 2020
Producer Note
The Swartland Winery is doing something totally new. In a world where most wines are starting to taste exactly the same, this winery is looking to change the game. And it makes sense; Swartland is nothing like most of South Africa's—and the world's—wine-producing regions. It is rugged, wild, hot. This winery has managed to capture the essence of their region, without losing the sophistication that discerning buyers have come to expect. Truly unique and just now being given the recognition that it deserves, these wines have been chosen specifically for our buyers, with their preferences and penchant for adventure in mind.
Winery Information
Swartland Winery was established in 1948 near Cape Town, South Africa as a cooperative cellar. It now operates as a full-fledged wine company with its own production and bottling facilities. Wheat and grapes grow by the hectare throughout the region, with Swartland Winery producing from 3,600 hectares of vines from a 22km radius of surrounding farmland. The winery produces about 2 million 9 litre cases of wine a year, and its wines have been winning many awards in the past few years as their international acclaim rises. This region, with its hot, dry weather and bright blue skies, has proven to be an amazing place for growing bush wines. Since the 1990s, more red grape varieties have been planted than ever before, so South African red wine has become a more popular option on the market. Swartland red wine is exemplified in their Winemakers Collection, though they also produce a range of white, sparkling, and fortified wines.
Vineyard Note
For this vineyard, environmental sustainability is just as important as the balance of flavours. They select a variety of different wine grapes, raised with as little intervention as possible and amongst cover crops for nutrition, moisture, and protection, to create an expertly blended flavour. Averaging a yield of six tonnes of fruit per hectare, the grapes grown in these vineyards are unsurpassed in quality and reflect the vivacity of their environment.
Tasting Note
Rich aromas of dried fruit, peach, apricot and citrus hints follow through onto a creamy palate. A crisp, well balanced and intense wine, with integrated oak, is still light enough to enjoy more than one glass!
