Our range includes the amazing Rabl Eiswine and the superb wines from Andrew Quady. Dessert wines are made when the grapes are left on the vines for more time. This causes them to shrivel up and the natural water evaporates and what is left is very concentrated. The grapes often look mouldy and this is known as 'Noble Rot'. This is an essential part of making dessert wine as the winemaker want's the residual sugar to be high but also needs the taste, acidity and flavours to be just right. Dessert wine therefore can be a very costly thing to try to make.
It is said that the original dessert wine was discovered in Schloss Johannisberger. The wealthy owner of the vineyards announced the optimal time to gather the grapes each year and the workers would harvest the crop accordingly. One year he was abroad and the grapes did not get harvested in time. They got mouldy and shrunk and on his return, the wealthy owner was very unhappy. He ordered the harvest to start anyway and the workers had to hand-select each grape as the majority were worthless. The wine was made and left in a dark corner of the cellar never to see the light of day.
An English wine merchant visited the estate on a buying trip and after tasting his way through most of the wines and making his order he asked about the old wines left in the corner and hidden away from everything else. Once the story of these terrible wines was told to him the owner agreed to let him taste them as an experiment to see how awful the wine was. The merchant fell in love with this awful wine and promptly bought every bottle in the cellar and insisted that they make wine this way in every vintage. The wines have been made in that same estate for the last 300 years since in this exact way and copied throughout the world.
