Gewurztraminer is grown in cooler climate countries as this is where the grape seems to thrive. many new world countries such as New Zealand and Australia are experimenting with this varietal with great success but its roots are firmly based in Alsace. It's was originally cultivated in the Tramin region of Italy where it's name is Traminer. The Gewürz literally means "close to or near to" as Tramin is very close to Alsace - hence the name Gewürztraminer. Notice the difference in spelling here as in France and internationally it is spelt without the umlaut ü whereas in Alsace and Germany this is used and it is spelt Gewürztraminer.
It is a wine that can produce a vast array of flavours and aromas depending on where it is grown and how it is harvested. Some of its flavours can include lychees, Turkish Delight and a delightful degree of sweetness or fruitiness depending on how it is fermented. The aromas also enjoy a great spectrum and it's typical to be able to smell rose petals, passion fruit, petrol and lychees.
Gewurtz as it is often known can be made in dry, sweet, medium sweet and even dessert-style wines. It enjoys particular success as a very sweet dessert wine where it can truly shine and display it's the amazing range of flavours and aromas.
