White wine to make you an instant connoisseur. The Sauvignon Blanc grape is a suave and sophisticated vine hailing from Bordeaux, France. Its taste is rarely uninteresting and with a constant not found in many other wines, it’s a quality you can purchase again and again, sure in the knowledge it will please guests.
This variety of grape is grown in many countries but the New Zealand wine produced from it has made waves. It’s fairly young in terms of ancestry and originally planted in New Zealand in 1975, despite naysayers declaring the region unsuitable for a good grape.
Not deterred they produced a variety of crisp and aromatic wines and some believe it’s the hole in the ozone that produces such a defined grape in this region of the world. But whatever the reason, it has such wonderful flexibility and pleasantness of taste there should be a bottle or two in everyone's wine rack.
With an endearing ability to smell like the plant it was grown next to, it lends itself to easy recognition of the vineyard it was grown in. Ideal for those wanting to become a real connoisseur (or look good at parties).
This ‘Wild White’ grape is fermented slowly at low temperatures in stainless steel. With some varieties barrel-aged to infuse with flavours like dill, nutmeg, and cream.
Cooler climates produce an acidic wine with greener flavours giving hints of nettle, green grass, herbs, and floral notes. These varieties work well with light or unseasoned food due to the mineral flavouring of the wine. Including; shellfish, fish dishes, goats cheese salad, and raw tomatoes. And whilst warmer climates may lose some aromatics they produce a stronger tropical fruit flavour.
Working particularly well as an aperitif, the strong flavours can also accompany herb dishes and food that’s also strong on taste.
Serve citrusy wine with fish and chips, Mexican, or Greek dishes. Grassy flavoured wine works perfectly with salads, asparagus, green pepper dishes, or anything flavoured with lime. And the NZ Sav Blanc matured in oak is a great alternative to a chardonnay when eating white meat dishes or creamy pasta.
With varieties produced in regions such as Marlborough, Martinborough, Hawkes Bay, and Waipara Valley there’s bound to be a bottle to suit your taste buds.
Grown on sandy soils for their poor fertility, and over slate shingles for the drainage, these ideal growing conditions intensify the flavours.
The crisp, uplifting notes of this wine are an excellent choice at any time of year, but perfect for those spring get-togethers under the warming sun. Whether you’re looking for a wine to share with friends, serve before dinner, or for something more intimate, you can’t go wrong with a Kiwi Sauvignon.
