The Sangiovese grape variety produces a light to medium-bodied red wine which is a perfect match to food such as pizza and pasta. Sangiovese thrives in the Tuscany region of Italy where some of the finest examples of this grape variety are produced. This is a grape that is grown all over the world and is seeing new plantings in Australia, Chile and Argentina.
Its flavour characteristics depend often on how it is vinified and if oak ageing is used in the production of this wine. It generally produces a medium tannin and medium-bodied red wine with aromas and flavours of sour cherries. It blends very well with other grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon and has huge success in the Emilia Romagna and Tuscan blends of this style of wine.
It can also produce full-bodied wines like the Tauleto Sangiovese from Umberto Cesari
Sangiovese is thought to be Italy's largest planted grape variety mainly due to its slow ripening and the fact that it will grow well in many different soil types. The website Wikipedia has more information on this fabulous grape.
