Swartland Winery Founders Sauvignon Blanc 2020
This is warm climate Sauvignon Blanc complete with all that that entails - no light citrus flavours or apple-peel acidity here, we're talking passionfruit, green pepper, guava and ripe figs. The acidity is still fresh however (due in part to Swartland's position on an elevated plateau), underscoring the bold fruit flavours and leading into a long and enduring finish. This would be perfect with an exotic, North African-inspired salad with plenty of harissa and roasted vegetables.
In the winery, the grapes were fermented cool to retain the natural fruit flavours. No animal-based fining agents or winery aids were used during the vinification.
The Swartland region of South Africa is at the forefront of the new wave Cape wine movement. Swartland Winery attempts to showcase the very best of this rugged, unforgiving terroir, crafting an expressive range of wines that typify the zeitgeist of the modern South African wine scene with the aid of vegan-friendly winemaking techniques.
Swartland Winery was established in 1948 near Cape Town, South Africa as a cooperative cellar. It now operates as a full-fledged wine company with its own production and bottling facilities. Wheat and grapes grow by the hectare throughout the region, with Swartland Winery producing from 3,600 hectares of vines from a 22km radius of surrounding farmland. The winery produces about 2 million 9 litre cases of wine a year, and its wines have been winning many awards in the past few years as their international acclaim rises. This region, with its hot, dry weather and bright blue skies, has proven to be an amazing place for growing bush wines. Since the 1990s, more red grape varieties have been planted than ever before, so South African red wine has become a more popular option on the market. Swartland red wine is exemplified in their Winemakers Collection, though they also produce a range of white, sparkling, and fortified wines.
For this vineyard, environmental sustainability is just as important as balance of flavors. They select a variety of different wine grapes, raised with as little intervention as possible and amongst cover crops for nutrition, moisture, and protection, to create an expertly blended flavor. Averaging a yield of six tonnes of fruit per hectare, the grapes grown in these vineyards are unsurpassed in quality and reflect the vivacity of their environment.
A delicate but complex nose with a bouquet of tropical fruit, a hint of green pepper and ripe figs. A refreshingly crisp palate with upfront fruity flavours of gooseberries, melon and more juicy tropical fruits on the lingering finish.
Ideal with fresh tasting dishes, a green salad, fresh oysters or grilled fish with lemon butter. Or simply enjoy this accessible, summery wine on its own.
