Wines made with the Viura or Macabeo grape variety.
This is a white wine generally from the northeast of Spain and the Cava producing regions near Barcelona where it is blended with Xarel lo and Parellada to make Cava,
Viura is used predominantly in white Rioja and it is mostly used for early consumption as the wine is often mildly acidic and works well when it is oaked or unoaked. It is occasionally blended with Tempranillo and red Garnacha when making white Rioja. This is unusual as most people think white wine only comes from white grapes. However, all grapes when pressed give a clear fluid and this is why these red grapes can be used in the production.
It is sometimes confusing as many growers will brand their wine as Macabeo and others will call the wine Viura. It is generally thought of as one of Spains largest produced grape varieties and is not really seen in any other country.
