Berton Vineyards Reserve Barossa Shiraz 2019
This is the Berton Vineyards Barossa Shiraz sibling of Berton Vineyard's Coonawarra Reserve Cabernet and, just like its brother, is a prime example of how good affordable Australian wines can be. This has to be one of the best value for money red wines available anywhere!
This is a big, big wine - deepest darkest red, with a rich, full-bodied palate of ripe blackcurrant, bramble and black cherry, with hints of pepper and a cosy mocha note. This is a great example of Barossa Valley Shiraz at an affordable price, combining the classic Aussie boldness with a fresher, more modern winemaking style. Drink it with a hearty root vegetable stew, or a vegetarian lasagne.
After fermentation, the wine was aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels for 16 months, lending it a hint of toasty spice and vanilla. No animal-based fining agents or winery aids were used during the vinification.
Berton Vineyards is a modern, forward-looking producer, embracing the technology and possibilities of vegan winemaking.
The Barossa Reserve Shiraz from Bob Berton is one of Berton Vineyards flagship wines. This is a rich, full-bodied wine with ripe black cherry and blackberry fruit and hints of coffee and spice. It's a big wine and will pair well with chargrilled steak, roast meats or game yet for those who love full-bodied red it can be delightful once decanted as a drink on its own.
Established by Bob and Cherie Berton in May 1996 with 75 acres of land at 450m above sea level on gently rolling hills in a sub-region of Eden Valley in South Australia. The superb Reserve Shiraz and Reserve Chardonnay wines are still sourced from this plot. In 2007 Bob purchased the Yenda winery in the heart of the Riverina. This state of the art facility has the capacity to process 10,000 tonnes and allows Berton Vineyards to produce value for money wines that sit alongside his premium single-vineyard offerings.
Vinification
The wine was pressed off into stainless steel tank where it completed its malolactic fermentation in the late autumn. The wine was then racked off onto both French and American oak resulting in a spicey sweet fruit shiraz.
Tasting Note
This Reserve Shiraz is deep red in colour with a very youthful, vibrant hue. The aromas are powerful and complex with a wealth of fruit including ripe black cherries and blackberries with hints of eucalyptus and spice. The rich, full-bodied palate is brimming with mulberry, blackberry and vanilla notes, which are underpinned by a fine tannin structure.
