Dona Paula Altitude 1350 Uco Valley 2017

Complex and balanced with spicy and floral notes surrounding a core of red fruit. Elegant with lovely texture and a long, persistent finish.

Producer Note - Doña Paula is a leading, modern winery at the forefront of exploring and investing in new, high quality wine regions in Argentina. Established in 1997, they own all of their vineyards covering 700 hectares. These vineyard sites are located in the best subregions within Mendoza including Ugarteche, Altamira, Gualtallary and Tupungato. The vineyards have always been cultivated using sustainable methods which helps to maximise the true expression of terroir, and in 2019 Doña Paula was certified as a sustainably managed winery by Bodegas de Argentina. Continuous innovation in vineyard management ensures Doña Paula produces top quality wines from one year to the next.

Vintage - Warm temperatures during spring resulted in early bud break and early flowering. However, the combination of two cold springs in succession in the previous years (2015/16) has resulted in smaller clusters forming in 2017. Excellent weather conditions during the ripening period accelerated the harvest and ensured the grapes were in perfect health when picked. The 2017 vintage will be remembered for its superb quality, flavour concentration and low volume.

Vineyard - Doña Paula 1350 comes from two blocks (No.10 and No.7) in the Alluvia vineyard, which is located in Gualtallary, at 1,350 metres above sea level. The soil is sandy, with alluvial and calcareous stones; the calcium carbonate content ranges from medium to very high with caliche which is present in very old soils, where the vine vigour is reduced resulting in concentrated flavours in the grapes. The Uco Valley is renowned for its warm days and cool nights and has an average temperature variation of 12.5 °C. This encourages a long, slow ripening period where the grapes gradually produce rich fruit flavours, balanced by fresh acidity and pronounced aromatics. The average annual rainfall is 280 millimetres. Snow-melt water and drip irrigation systems are used to nourish the espalier-trained vines, which yield 10 tonnes per hectare. At Doña Paula, the vineyards have always been managed using sustainable agricultural practices and the grapes are manually harvested. The blend comprises a small quantity of Casavecchia, an extremely rare red grape variety from Campania, Italy. Casavecchia has high levels of anthocyanins which impart its wines with deep colours and strong, supple tannins.

Winemaking - The grapes were gently destemmed without crushing. Each variety was vinified separately and underwent cold maceration in stainless steel tanks, to extract the primary aromas. Once fermentation was complete, the wines were blended. Maturation lasted for 16 months, in French oak barrels, of which 20% were new.

Tasting Note - A complex, beautifully balanced wine with spicy and floral notes from the Cabernet Franc and vibrant red fruit notes from the Malbec. Elegant and well-structured with polished tannins which give a long, persistent finish.

Can you explain your shipping charges?

We charge the amount the courier charges us to deliver the wines. In the majority of cases this is £10.00 for a dozen wines. For local delivery we charge £5.00 as we can often do this ourselves, by local we mean Milton Keynes.

Couriers charge by weight and size and a case of wines is both heavy and bulky and so the costs are fairly high. The charges are the same if you are buying 1 bottle or 6 bottles but they change if you go over 6 bottles due the the excess weight and size. Couriers also charge a fee to cover fuel excess and this all goes towards the total cost not to mention the 20% VAT to be added to everything.

Currently if someone orders a dozen wines they are charged £10.00 but if they order 24 bottles the charge is the same!

If you wish to have your wines shipped to other countries the costs are extreemly high and often not worth paying for. The cost for example to ship to the USA for a dozen wines would be £100.00 for the shipping alone! Therefore we have taken the decision not to ship any wines outside of the UK.

What is your minimum order?

The minimum order is 1 bottle! I prefer it if people order more and you get better value with the delivery if you do this too!

What if I want to send wine as a gift?

No problem, we will send to your preferred address and even include a card free of charge!

We have two kinds of cards a blank one and a Thank you one. However if you want a Valentines one or a birthday card or anyother type of card please let us know. We will write your personal greeting and even include the soppy stuff. We don't charge for the cards as its our way of thanking you for choosing us to send a gift to your loved one.

What about a discount?

I may be able to take a little off the price if you ask nicely and there is a large enough order. Please do not ask for a discount on any orders under 12 bottles.  Email me with your requirements and I will let you know if I can do anything. However the best way to get a discount is to sign up for the newsletter as there is often special offers given away to newsletter subscribers.
