Paula Malbec from Dona Paula 2020
Made by the Dona Paula Estate in Mendoza, Argentina, Paula Malbec has a perfect balance of red fruit and alcohol, resulting in a silky smooth texture and herbal flavours mixed with blackcurrants. It is a little easier on the palate than classic French Malbec wine. The Dona Paula Malbec is still bold, yet pairs better with a meal. Much of the global production of this variety can be found in Argentina, making them a leading producer and expert in this dark purple grape variety. Argentine Malbec differs in its tannic structure to French Malbec, which tends to feel harsher on the tongue and throat. In fact, Argentine Malbec has succeeded where the French variety has not due to a superior climate that makes for healthier vines less prone to disease and rot.
Dona Paula was established in 1997 and began exporting to the Netherlands, the UK, and the US in 2002. The estate winery currently owns 703 hectares of vineyards throughout Mendoza in the foothills of the Andes. They have been perfecting their Malbec since their establishment, beginning with their first vineyard in Ugarteche. It has utilised sustainable agriculture and organic practises throughout its tenure. Dona Paula wines have won a number of awards against other Argentinian wineries and gained status among professional wine tasters for their superior wines. It has benefited from an increase in demand from the US, Europe, and around the world for Argentinian wines. Exports to the US alone tripled between 2002 and 2006. Dona Paula wines meet the elusive ideals of terroir, variety, and lower production costs, allowing them to produce sustainable estate wines and offer them at a wonderful value to their customers.
The grapes of this Argentine Malbec are grown about 1,050 meters above sea level in El Alto Vineyard in Ugarteche. The poor, rocky soil there is rich in clay with alluvial stone inlays. The average temperature variation is 14 degrees Celsius, and an average of 250mm of rain falls each year. The vines climb espalier trellises. Warm days and cool nights produce 10 to 12 tonnes per hectare, making it a low-yield crop. Drip irrigation provides each plant with the ideal amount of water without the waste or run-off of other methods.
After a March harvest, the grapes are destemmed, then they undergo a gentle crushing process. The cold pre-fermentative maceration preserves the primary aromas, followed by cooling and traditional fermentation. The post-fermentation maceration continues for 10 to 15 days, followed by malolactic fermentation.
The velvety, soft mouthfeel of this concentrated Dona Paula Malbec combines with sweet, spicy aromas for a delicious experience alone or paired with food. The dark purple wine holds notes of red fruits and Herbes de Provence. You may also taste blackberry, plum, black cherry, tobacco, and cocoa powder. It is somewhat dry and acidic, with only 2.4g/l of residual sugar. Although the softness and elements of sweetness make it easy to drink, it has a high alcohol content of 14%.
Malbec pairs well with anything umami. A lovely accompaniment to barbecued meat, gourmet sausages or steak and chips.
