Eden Road Wine Company, Maragle Chardonnay 2017
The Eden Road Maragle Chardonnay is a stunning white wine from Australia. This wine is sop serious it's often compared to Grand Cru Chablis in terms of it's style, texture and flavours. We highly recommend you buy some of this amazing white wine and see how majestic it is for yourself.
Located in Murrumbateman in New South Wales' Canberra Wine District, boutique winery Eden Road was established in 2008 by businessman Chris Coffman and was awarded the most prestigious wine award in Australia - The Jimmy Watson - for its first vintage of The Long Road Shiraz in 2009. Its collection of cool climate wines in a raft of exciting and original styles are highly-prized, and owe much to the soils the vines are planted on which were formed over 400 million years ago and are some of the oldest on the planet.
Vintage
2012 was incredible for Tumbarumba Chardonnay. It was challenging, with lots of rainfall, however it fell in big storms rather than constantly. There were plenty of sunshine hours in between the rain and there was enough sunshine to really ripen the fruit. 2012 is shaping up to be a benchmark vintage for Tumbarumba with fantastic acidity.
Vineyard
The grapes come from a small 12 hectare Maragle vineyard south of Tumbarumba with just two hectares of Chardonnay. Grown at an altitude of 400 metres above sea level, it is a unique site that generally produces more powerfully structured Chardonnay, than other vineyards in the region.
Winemaking
The winemaking was kept simple in order to express the terroir. The fruit was whole bunch pressed and transferred to French oak, of which 40% was new with the remainder being second or third fill. With no settling, the fermentation took place with cultured yeast. A part malolactic fermentation occurred naturally, of approximately 50%. The wine spent 12 months in oak.
Tasting Note
Made in tiny volumes, this gently oaked very fresh and long living Chardonnay is close in style to a Grand Cru Chablis. Beautiful texture and finely woven acidity add to the complex characteristics of exceptionally serious Chardonnay
