Hiruzta Txakoli 2019

Hirutzta Txakoli is a difficult wine to pronounce but is one you won't forget when you try it. Think of the crisp freshness of a Riesling combined with the gentle sprint of a Vouvray and then throw in some Basque magic and you have Txakoli (pronounced chack-o-ly). The grapes used in the blend are from local varietals that many people will not have heard of but the combine beautifully to produce an outstanding wine of exceptional quality and flavour. This is a superb wine to drink on it's own as an aperatif yet it pairs wonderfully with mild cheese, shellfish and seafood in general.

The project has been launched by the Rekalde Family, whose aim is to restore the tradition of txakoli production in Hondarribia (the town which lends its name to the grape variety with which txakoli is produced -the Hondarrabi Zuri); this tradition was lost in the 17th century and is now being restored thanks to the HIRUZTA project. The first vineyards were planted in 2008, and the first wines were placed on the market in 2011.

Vintage

2014, not as 2013 was a perfect vintage. Soft spring and hot days in summer and the weeks before the harvest.

Vineyard

All the vines are in planted in trellis. This is not the traditional planting method, it is used to avoid the high humidity, to increase airflow and to have more exposure to the sun during the day. The climate is wet and rainy, so the vines are planted in a south-westerly exposure to maximise the potential sunshine onto the vines. Manually harvested in 20kg cases, all the grapes are cooled to 5-8ºC to avoid starting any fermentation oroxidation proccess.

Winemaking

Grapes harvested and transported in small crates. Destemming and crushing, followed by gentle pressing. Cold racking at 8' to 10'C. Fermentation at a controlled temperature of between 16' and 18'C. Stored in tanks at a cool temperature to allow the natural carbonic gas to dissolve. Gentle clarification and stabilisation.

Tasting Note

Pale yellow colour with greenish glints. Rich aromas of white (apple), citrus (grapefruit) and tropical (pineapple) fruits, cloaked in an array of white flowers, all enhanced by the subtle efferve scence of the natural carbonic gas. Balanced and fresh in the mouth, it has the slight taste of a pearl wine with well integrated acidity. Agreeable on the palate with hints of pineapple and grapefruit in the long, aromatic finish.

Serving Suggestion

Appetisers, hors d'oeuvres. Serving temperature: 8' to 10'C. Keeps in the bottle for up to two years.

Can you explain your shipping charges?

We charge the amount the courier charges us to deliver the wines. In the majority of cases this is £10.00 for a dozen wines. For local delivery we charge £5.00 as we can often do this ourselves, by local we mean Milton Keynes.

Couriers charge by weight and size and a case of wines is both heavy and bulky and so the costs are fairly high. The charges are the same if you are buying 1 bottle or 6 bottles but they change if you go over 6 bottles due the the excess weight and size. Couriers also charge a fee to cover fuel excess and this all goes towards the total cost not to mention the 20% VAT to be added to everything.

Currently if someone orders a dozen wines they are charged £10.00 but if they order 24 bottles the charge is the same!

If you wish to have your wines shipped to other countries the costs are extreemly high and often not worth paying for. The cost for example to ship to the USA for a dozen wines would be £100.00 for the shipping alone! Therefore we have taken the decision not to ship any wines outside of the UK.

What is your minimum order?

The minimum order is 1 bottle! I prefer it if people order more and you get better value with the delivery if you do this too!

What if I want to send wine as a gift?

No problem, we will send to your preferred address and even include a card free of charge!

We have two kinds of cards a blank one and a Thank you one. However if you want a Valentines one or a birthday card or anyother type of card please let us know. We will write your personal greeting and even include the soppy stuff. We don't charge for the cards as its our way of thanking you for choosing us to send a gift to your loved one.

What about a discount?

I may be able to take a little off the price if you ask nicely and there is a large enough order. Please do not ask for a discount on any orders under 12 bottles.  Email me with your requirements and I will let you know if I can do anything. However the best way to get a discount is to sign up for the newsletter as there is often special offers given away to newsletter subscribers.
