Idaia Winery Vilana Dafnes 2016 from Crete

The Vilana Dafnes is a superb Cretan white wine that shows bold notes of lemon, green apple and pink grapefruit, this flinty wine is beautifully balanced and has a persistent, aromatic finish with notes of white pepper.

Producer Note - Idaia Winery is located in Venerato, a village in the heart of the vineyards of the Malevizi district, which is part of the Dafnes appellation area. Idaia is a family company, specialising in producing wines from indigenous grapes, which reflect a true sense of place. Oenologists Vasilis Laderos and Calliope Volitaki use their extensive knowledge, experience and passion to create these superb wines with strong personalities. We are delighted to include these wines in our portfolio, they are truly expressive of the terroir of Crete.

Vintage - The summer temperatures were cooled by the strong, dry north winds of the Aegean Sea, known as Aegean Meltemia. The grapes underwent a slow, gradual ripening period reaching good maturity levels at harvest time. 2016 was characterised as a great year for white wines, especially for the Vilana variety, which resulted grapes with balanced sugar and acidity levels and strong typical varietal characteristics.

Vineyard - The indigenous variety of Vilana (pronounced Vil-AH-nah) is grown in the Dafnes region, in vineyards located at an altitude of 400 to 500 metres above sea level. The combination of the calcium rich, clayish soil; the very low yielding vines and the distinctive microclimate, which is formed by the cool Aegean summer breeze, creates a unique terroir for viticulture and wine production.

Winemaking - The winemaking philosophy is to produce wines which showcase the quality of the indigenous varieties. Following a thorough inspection at the winery, the grapes were preserved for 24 hours at very low temperatures. The grapes were destemmed, then a cryomaceration took place for approximately six hours. The free run juice was removed without having been pressed. After a cold settling, the wine was fermented with carefully selected yeasts which highlight the aromatic characters of this variety. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks for 10 to 12 days at temperatures that did not exceed 16°C, maintaining the purity of fruit in the final wine.

Tasting Note - Expressing typical Vilana characteristics of bold notes of lemon, green apple, pear and a delicate hint of jasmine. This complex wine is immaculately balanced and has a lingering, aromatic finish.

Serving Suggestion - A fresh and versatile wine which accompanies seafood dishes, summer salads and Mediterranean cuisine.

Can you explain your shipping charges?

We charge the amount the courier charges us to deliver the wines. In the majority of cases this is £10.00 for a dozen wines. For local delivery we charge £5.00 as we can often do this ourselves, by local we mean Milton Keynes.

Couriers charge by weight and size and a case of wines is both heavy and bulky and so the costs are fairly high. The charges are the same if you are buying 1 bottle or 6 bottles but they change if you go over 6 bottles due the the excess weight and size. Couriers also charge a fee to cover fuel excess and this all goes towards the total cost not to mention the 20% VAT to be added to everything.

Currently if someone orders a dozen wines they are charged £10.00 but if they order 24 bottles the charge is the same!

If you wish to have your wines shipped to other countries the costs are extreemly high and often not worth paying for. The cost for example to ship to the USA for a dozen wines would be £100.00 for the shipping alone! Therefore we have taken the decision not to ship any wines outside of the UK.

What is your minimum order?

The minimum order is 1 bottle! I prefer it if people order more and you get better value with the delivery if you do this too!

What if I want to send wine as a gift?

No problem, we will send to your preferred address and even include a card free of charge!

We have two kinds of cards a blank one and a Thank you one. However if you want a Valentines one or a birthday card or anyother type of card please let us know. We will write your personal greeting and even include the soppy stuff. We don't charge for the cards as its our way of thanking you for choosing us to send a gift to your loved one.

What about a discount?

I may be able to take a little off the price if you ask nicely and there is a large enough order. Please do not ask for a discount on any orders under 12 bottles.  Email me with your requirements and I will let you know if I can do anything. However the best way to get a discount is to sign up for the newsletter as there is often special offers given away to newsletter subscribers.
