Il Pumo Primitivo from San Marzano 2020
Formerly know as Lucarelli Primitivo, San Marzano are a coperative of over 1000 growers from the Puglia region in Italy. They decided to undergo a rebranding exercise in 2013 to bring all their wines under the same name as San Marzano. The Il Pumo Primitivo is the same wine with a different label.
In the heart of d.o.p. Primitivo di Manduria and Mediterranean terroir, Cantine San Marzano has settled in Apulia, Italy. The cantine was established in 1962 by 19 vine growers whose families had farmed the area for generations. It has evolved with the years while maintaining its loyalty to traditional Apulian winemaking. Now the co-operative consists of over 1000 wine growers of the Puglia region. San Marzano wines are elegant and offer a wide variation of appeal, from red to white to rosé, sparkling and not. Prior to 2013, they were known as Lucarelli, but they have since re branded and become a world-renowned name in winemaking with many awards. They have won wine awards in China and Japan as well as in Italy, both nationally and internationally.
The grapes were destemmed and fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks at 21-24C. The wine was left to rest in tank until bottled
Cordon & bush vines
Intense notes of prunes and cherry combined with rosemary and vanilla. A full-flavoured wine, soft and balanced, and eminently drinkable. This wine is mild in tannins and is very appealing to both male and female drinkers of red. The Primitivo grape has been used to add colour and high alcohol to many wines not associated with Puglia including Amarone and Bordeaux!
