Jim Barry Wines McKays Single Vineyard Clare Valley Riesling 2018

Complex aromas of pink grapefruit, lime and a lift of tropical guava lead to a generous yet precise palate with a light, creamy texture and a lively, mineral finish.

Producer Note - Certain names resonate strongly within Australian wine history and Jim Barry is one of them. It was Jim Barry's drive that helped shape South Australia's Clare Valley as a benchmark producer of world class Riesling and cemented it as one of Australia's premier wine regions. Jim was the first qualified winemaker in the Clare Valley, graduating with a degree in oenology from the prestigious Roseworthy Agricultural College in 1947. Founded in 1959, Jim Barry Wines is still family owned, with three generations of Roseworthy graduates. Jim's son Peter became managing director in 1985 and today Peter's children Tom, Sam and Olivia are the winemaker, commercial manager and brand ambassador respectively. Voted '2020 Winery of the Year' at the Halliday Wine Companion Awards they produce highly acclaimed and award-winning wines.

Vintage - 2018 was characterised by a particularly dry growing season, with less than 15 centimetres of rain falling between October to March. However, two thirds of this rain fell at critical points in November and December which promoted growth and enabled the fruit to develop evenly. Adequate soil reserves and canopy management preserved the vines from the effects of the hot conditions. As a result there was very low disease pressure and the fruit was in excellent condition at harvest.

Vineyard - The Clare Valley is a series of undulating hills within the higher ranges of the grape growing area. Vine aspect and row orientation is as critical as soil type in terms of the suitability of a vineyard site for a particular variety. Distinct parcels of fruit are selected to make wines that reflect the vineyard from which the grapes are grown. This Riesling was sourced from the McKay's vineyard in Watervale. South or east facing slopes best suited for Riesling as they are shielded from the hot northerly winds that can occur during summer and also receive the cooler morning sun. The soil in the McKay's vineyard is clay over limestone, which is free draining. The Clare valley climate is continental with a high diurnal temperature difference with clear skies. The cool nights lead to the preservation of crisp natural acidity and delicate flavours.

Winemaking - The grapes were harvested in the cool of the night, to preserve the flavours in the fruit. The fruit was immediately pressed without skin contact and after cold settling the juice was racked. Fermentation took place with a proportion of the lighter "fluffy" lees and selected yeasts at 14 to 16°C, lasting two to three weeks. A small parcel was cool fermented in aged French oak barrels, to enhance the texture of the wine.

Tasting Note - Notes of lime cordial, pink grapefruit and lemon rind open up to regional Watervale musk and floral notes. A powerful and concentrated Riesling ,with great depth of flavour and a silky, acid profile which gives focus, line and length.

Can you explain your shipping charges?

We charge the amount the courier charges us to deliver the wines. In the majority of cases this is £10.00 for a dozen wines. For local delivery we charge £5.00 as we can often do this ourselves, by local we mean Milton Keynes.

Couriers charge by weight and size and a case of wines is both heavy and bulky and so the costs are fairly high. The charges are the same if you are buying 1 bottle or 6 bottles but they change if you go over 6 bottles due the the excess weight and size. Couriers also charge a fee to cover fuel excess and this all goes towards the total cost not to mention the 20% VAT to be added to everything.

Currently if someone orders a dozen wines they are charged £10.00 but if they order 24 bottles the charge is the same!

If you wish to have your wines shipped to other countries the costs are extreemly high and often not worth paying for. The cost for example to ship to the USA for a dozen wines would be £100.00 for the shipping alone! Therefore we have taken the decision not to ship any wines outside of the UK.

What is your minimum order?

The minimum order is 1 bottle! I prefer it if people order more and you get better value with the delivery if you do this too!

What if I want to send wine as a gift?

No problem, we will send to your preferred address and even include a card free of charge!

We have two kinds of cards a blank one and a Thank you one. However if you want a Valentines one or a birthday card or anyother type of card please let us know. We will write your personal greeting and even include the soppy stuff. We don't charge for the cards as its our way of thanking you for choosing us to send a gift to your loved one.

What about a discount?

I may be able to take a little off the price if you ask nicely and there is a large enough order. Please do not ask for a discount on any orders under 12 bottles.  Email me with your requirements and I will let you know if I can do anything. However the best way to get a discount is to sign up for the newsletter as there is often special offers given away to newsletter subscribers.
