Jim Barry Wines The Armagh Clare Valley Shiraz 2012, 2013 and 2014 available

Complex and intense notes of rich, dark fruit, spice and dark chocolate are enveloped by a velvety palate. A wine of great power, length and poise.

Producer Note - Certain names resonate strongly within Australian wine history and Jim Barry is one of them. It was Jim Barry's drive that helped shape South Australia's Clare Valley as a benchmark producer of world class Riesling and cemented it as one of Australia's premier wine regions. Jim was the first qualified winemaker in the Clare Valley, graduating with a degree in oenology from the prestigious Roseworthy Agricultural College in 1947. Founded in 1959, Jim Barry Wines is still family owned, with three generations of Roseworthy graduates. Jim's son Peter became managing director in 1985 and today Peter's children Tom, Sam and Olivia are the winemaker, commercial manager and brand ambassador respectively. Voted '2020 Winery of the Year' at the Halliday Wine Companion Awards they produce highly acclaimed and award-winning wines.

Vintage - 2016 was characterised by being an early, condensed and exciting vintage. Good levels of rain fell during the winter, which helped to build the soil's water reserves. A very dry and hot spring followed and flowering occurred early. The dry, warm weather continued throughout the ripening period and into the harvest, resulting in healthy grapes of excellent quality.

Vineyard - The iconic 'Armagh' vineyard was named by the original Irish settlers who arrived in 1849 and called the lush, rolling hills after their homeland. In 1968, the vineyard was purchased by Jim Barry who planted it with Shiraz. Today these low-yielding vines produce less 27 hectolitres per hectare. The soil is sandy gravel and receives an average rainfall of 600 millimetres per year. The vineyard lies on a northwest facing slope which acts as a natural sun trap, ensuring the fruit is always fully ripened at harvest time. The Clare Valley climate is continental with a high diurnal temperature difference, producing Shiraz with evenly ripened tannins and flavour.

Winemaking - The grapes were hand-harvested and meticulously sorted before being destemmed and crushed. Vinification took place in small two tonne open top fermenters with heading down boards, which submerge the cap while gently extracting colour, flavour and tannins. Pump-overs were conducted twice a day with a rack and return once per day. Fermentation lasted eight days, before being racked to oak barrels where the wine underwent malolactic fermentation. The wine was matured for 16 months in 60% French and 40% American oak hogsheads.

Tasting Note - Complex and intense aromas of rich dark fruit, mocha and garden herbs lead to a palate of concentrated dark fruit flavours. Fine tannins envelope the abundance of black cherry, blackberry with undertones of mocha oak and just a hint of aniseed. This is a wine of great complexity, power, length and poise.

Can you explain your shipping charges?

We charge the amount the courier charges us to deliver the wines. In the majority of cases this is £10.00 for a dozen wines. For local delivery we charge £5.00 as we can often do this ourselves, by local we mean Milton Keynes.

Couriers charge by weight and size and a case of wines is both heavy and bulky and so the costs are fairly high. The charges are the same if you are buying 1 bottle or 6 bottles but they change if you go over 6 bottles due the the excess weight and size. Couriers also charge a fee to cover fuel excess and this all goes towards the total cost not to mention the 20% VAT to be added to everything.

Currently if someone orders a dozen wines they are charged £10.00 but if they order 24 bottles the charge is the same!

If you wish to have your wines shipped to other countries the costs are extreemly high and often not worth paying for. The cost for example to ship to the USA for a dozen wines would be £100.00 for the shipping alone! Therefore we have taken the decision not to ship any wines outside of the UK.

What is your minimum order?

The minimum order is 1 bottle! I prefer it if people order more and you get better value with the delivery if you do this too!

No problem, we will send to your preferred address and even include a card free of charge!

We have two kinds of cards a blank one and a Thank you one. However if you want a Valentines one or a birthday card or anyother type of card please let us know. We will write your personal greeting and even include the soppy stuff. We don't charge for the cards as its our way of thanking you for choosing us to send a gift to your loved one.

What about a discount?

I may be able to take a little off the price if you ask nicely and there is a large enough order. Please do not ask for a discount on any orders under 12 bottles.  Email me with your requirements and I will let you know if I can do anything. However the best way to get a discount is to sign up for the newsletter as there is often special offers given away to newsletter subscribers.
