Maggio Petite Sirah from Oak Ridge Winery 2017

This richly coloured wine offers opulent notes of ripe blackberry fruit with nuances of smoky bacon, vanilla and wild herbs, juicy and inviting.

Producer Note - For five generations the Maggio family has been growing wine grapes in Lodi, and providing elite California winemakers with superb fruit to make their wines. In 2002, the family turned their own hand to winemaking, using the same estate-grown fruit that they had sold for so many years. Now they proudly put their name on bottles that reflect their long and uncompromising commitments to sustainable agriculture and winemaking excellence.

Vintage - 2016 saw an excellent growing season. A mild winter and spring led to warm days and cool nights in the summer, creating the ideal balance between acidity and concentrated fruit flavours. Late rains affected much of the area at harvest time, but fortunately, these vines were not affected.

Vineyard - The winemaking philosophy at Oak Ridge honours the importance of finding a balance between the land and the makers, beginning first with growing quality grapes. Maggio has become part of the Lodi Rules initiative, which guides sustainable farming practices. Created by farmers it was initially launched as a grassroots educational integrated pest management programme in 1992. Recognising the importance of the ecosystem and biodiversity in the vineyard, it includes pest management initiatives, such as introducing natural predators, which minimises the risks to birds, bees, water and people. Water is carefully managed to ensure efficiency and waste is limited. The soils are treated with organic matter and are cultivated to maximise water penetration to sustain the vine's roots. As a result, the grapes are concentrated with flavour, which translates into fruit-forward, expressive wines.

Winemaking - Each variety was vinified separately to bring out the potential of each lot. The Petite Sirah (a synonym for Durif) grapes underwent a pre-fermentation cold soak for 48 hours. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks with a specially selected yeast. Fermentation took place at controlled temperatures of 21 to 26°C, during which the wine underwent twice daily pump-overs reducing to one pump-over as the Brix level lowered. The wine was pressed and racked off its lees before undergoing malolactic fermentation. The wine was matured with oak influence for 10 months adding complexity to the resulting blend.

Tasting Note - This richly coloured wine offers opulent notes of dark berried fruit and blueberry, with nuances of black pepper, fine cocoa and vanilla. Showing lovely balance, the ripe fruit is enveloped in elegant tannins through to a lingering finish.

Can you explain your shipping charges?

We charge the amount the courier charges us to deliver the wines. In the majority of cases this is £10.00 for a dozen wines. For local delivery we charge £5.00 as we can often do this ourselves, by local we mean Milton Keynes.

Couriers charge by weight and size and a case of wines is both heavy and bulky and so the costs are fairly high. The charges are the same if you are buying 1 bottle or 6 bottles but they change if you go over 6 bottles due the the excess weight and size. Couriers also charge a fee to cover fuel excess and this all goes towards the total cost not to mention the 20% VAT to be added to everything.

Currently if someone orders a dozen wines they are charged £10.00 but if they order 24 bottles the charge is the same!

If you wish to have your wines shipped to other countries the costs are extreemly high and often not worth paying for. The cost for example to ship to the USA for a dozen wines would be £100.00 for the shipping alone! Therefore we have taken the decision not to ship any wines outside of the UK.

What is your minimum order?

The minimum order is 1 bottle! I prefer it if people order more and you get better value with the delivery if you do this too!

What if I want to send wine as a gift?

No problem, we will send to your preferred address and even include a card free of charge!

We have two kinds of cards a blank one and a Thank you one. However if you want a Valentines one or a birthday card or anyother type of card please let us know. We will write your personal greeting and even include the soppy stuff. We don't charge for the cards as its our way of thanking you for choosing us to send a gift to your loved one.

What about a discount?

I may be able to take a little off the price if you ask nicely and there is a large enough order. Please do not ask for a discount on any orders under 12 bottles.  Email me with your requirements and I will let you know if I can do anything. However the best way to get a discount is to sign up for the newsletter as there is often special offers given away to newsletter subscribers.
