Marchesi De' Frescobaldi Castelgiocondo Brunello di Montalcino 2015
The Castelgiocondo Brunello di Montalcino from Frescobaldi is a dense, warm, full-flavoured Brunello with leather and herbal notes combined with violets and toasted coffee. This Brunello di Montalcino is a lively, luminous ruby red. The nose offers a melange of berries, dominated by blackberry with floral notes of violets, backed by spicy black pepper and toasted coffee and hazelnuts. The texture is dense with elegant tannins. The finish is very long and warm with the spicy notes joined by intense fruity flavours. This superb red wine is best served with beef stews, game and aged cheeses.
One of the major and largest vine growing businesses in Europe, Frescobaldi owns nine estates covering over 1,000 ha of vineyards, all located in excellent areas for fine wines. Directly managed by its family members, Frescobaldi produces almost 7 million bottles and the wines are exported to over 60 countries throughout the world. The Frescobaldi name goes back many centuries into the history of art, culture, trade and finance of Italy in general and Tuscany in particular. From the second half of the last century, the Frescobaldi's were keen players in the development of Tuscan vine-growing
Vinification
The grapes were hand harvested during the first week of October and then pressed in soft horizontal presses. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at less than 30C and lasted 12 days. Maceration lasted 32 days. Immediately after alcoholic fermentation malolactic fermentation took place. The wine is matured for 4 years, of which at least 2 years must be spent in oak.
Viticulture
Spur pruned cordon and guyot vines with an average age of more than 29 years old. Medium to high density planting with 3,000 vines per hectare in the first generation vineyards; 5,500 in the vineyards recently planted.
Tasting Note
Clear hints of cherries and plums are accompanied by Brunello's traditional floral aromas of violets and lingering spicy notes. Concentrated and rich, well structured, this is a fine and aristocratic wine.
