Mulderbosch Chenin Blanc Steen Op Hout Stellenbosch 2019

The Mulderbosch Chenin Blanc Steen Op Hout has aromas of fresh pear, ripe apricot and subtle oak spice lead to a fine, crisp palate with vibrant flavours of ripe Granny Smith apples and cinnamon spice.

Producer Note - Founded in 1989, multi-award winning Mulderbosch Vineyards is one of South Africa's foremost wine producers. As advocates to the Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) code, they manage their vineyards limiting the use of herbicides, fungicides and pesticides. They use a restrained approach in the cellar to produce distinctive and characterful wines that represent the Stellenbosch terroir. Chenin Blanc is the Cape's signature variety and they have the largest planting of this variety in the world. In 1996, Mulderbosch was one of the very first producers in the Cape to ferment Chenin Blanc in barriques. The resultant wine garnered an avid following and Mulderbosch has since become synonymous with the variety.

Vineyard - There are two Chenin Blanc vineyards at Mulderbosch: one a trellised vineyard with some modifications to the top fruiting wires which expose the canopy to sunlight, and the other a dryland farmed bush vine block. The balance of our fruit for the 'Steen op Hout' blend is sourced from vineyards in Stellenbosch, mostly on soils derived from decomposed granite, and with high gravelly clay content. The vineyards vary in age from five years old to 35 years old. Significantly, they are all within a range two to eight miles from the Atlantic Ocean at False Bay, and as such are strongly influenced by a maritime climate, which plays a crucial role in the ultimate wine's freshness and poise.

Winemaking - Vinification was kept simple, a proportion was barrel fermented in 1,500 litre French oak foudres and a selection of neutral 500 litre oak with natural yeasts, followed by malolactic conversion. The remaining proportion of fruit was fermented with a selected neutral yeast in stainless steel, this portion did not undergo malolactic conversion to retain the crisp natural acidity. 40% of the blend was matured in large, neutral oak barrels and foudres for six months.

Tasting Note - A vibrant and fresh expression of Chenin Blanc. Aromas of fresh pear, apricot and subtle oak spice lead to a firm texture with a beautiful crisp line penetrating the length of the palate supporting flavours of ripe Granny Smith apples and cinnamon spice.

Grape - Chenin Blanc 100%

The technical information on this wine is correct to the best of our knowledge at the time of publication. This information may be subject to change according to vintage.

Can you explain your shipping charges?

We charge the amount the courier charges us to deliver the wines. In the majority of cases this is £10.00 for a dozen wines. For local delivery we charge £5.00 as we can often do this ourselves, by local we mean Milton Keynes.

Couriers charge by weight and size and a case of wines is both heavy and bulky and so the costs are fairly high. The charges are the same if you are buying 1 bottle or 6 bottles but they change if you go over 6 bottles due the the excess weight and size. Couriers also charge a fee to cover fuel excess and this all goes towards the total cost not to mention the 20% VAT to be added to everything.

Currently if someone orders a dozen wines they are charged £10.00 but if they order 24 bottles the charge is the same!

If you wish to have your wines shipped to other countries the costs are extreemly high and often not worth paying for. The cost for example to ship to the USA for a dozen wines would be £100.00 for the shipping alone! Therefore we have taken the decision not to ship any wines outside of the UK.

What is your minimum order?

The minimum order is 1 bottle! I prefer it if people order more and you get better value with the delivery if you do this too!

What if I want to send wine as a gift?

No problem, we will send to your preferred address and even include a card free of charge!

We have two kinds of cards a blank one and a Thank you one. However if you want a Valentines one or a birthday card or anyother type of card please let us know. We will write your personal greeting and even include the soppy stuff. We don't charge for the cards as its our way of thanking you for choosing us to send a gift to your loved one.

What about a discount?

I may be able to take a little off the price if you ask nicely and there is a large enough order. Please do not ask for a discount on any orders under 12 bottles.  Email me with your requirements and I will let you know if I can do anything. However the best way to get a discount is to sign up for the newsletter as there is often special offers given away to newsletter subscribers.
