Ocean Eight Vineyard & Winery Pinot Noir 2016
The Oceans Eight Pinot Noir is a fabulous example of Mornington Peninsula Pinot. Full of gentle, earthy tannins and lively acidity the flavours of summer fruit pudding and soft cherry are delightful. Serve this delicious red wine with crispy duck pancakes or in fact any fowl dish as it will compliment the meat wonderfully.
Owned by the Aylward family - founders of the renowned Kooyong winery - Ocean Eight was established in 2004 in the southern and cooler side of Mornington Peninsula. In their state-of-the-art, temperature controlled, gravity-fed winery winemaker Mike Aylward produces stunning cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir taking influence from the great old world wine regions of Alsace, Burgundy and Champagne. All the grapes for the Ocean Eight wines are sourced from the family's 17 hectares of vineyards and their total production each year is just 5,000 cases only.
Planted in 1999 in a 14 acre block of Pinot Noir, in the Mornington Peninsula. The clones are a mix of MV6, 114 and 115. The soil is sandy loam which has excellent drainage and provides good nutrients for vine health and flavours - particularly minerality. The vineyard has an elevation of 65 metres above sea level and faces north west, with great airflow which minimises disease pressure, as the canopy dries quickly.
The grapes were hand picked, hand sorted and fermented cold over a period of four to six weeks to maximise the aromatics and using natural yeasts. The wine was matured in 15% new oak and 500 litre puncheons were used, the balance went into three to four year old barrels for 12 months. This wine was unfiltered before being bottled.
A modern style Pinot Noir full of summer pudding fruit held together with gentle but distinctly earthy tannins and lively acidity carrying the finish and the bright red fruits forward.
A wonderful match with crispy duck pancakes or coq au vin. Also accompanies tuna and is ideal for sharing platters
