Producer Note - A region steeped in history, the vineyards of Pinet gained recognition as far back as Roman times when the Via Domitia traversed the vineyards, and in 1618 the Piquepoul variety was quoted by the famous botanist JB Magnol in his book Sylve Plantarium. The history of the Ormarine Cellars dates back one hundred years when in 1922 a group of winegrowers from Pinet gathered in the spirit of solidarity and formed a winegrowers association, with the aim of enhancing the quality of the white wine production in the region. Recognition came in 1985 when Picpoul de Pinet was classified as an AOC. The Ormarine Cellars have paved the way, producing crisp, refreshing fruit-driven wines from this fashionable appellation.
Vintage - 2020 will be remembered for its changeable climate. The wet winter generously replenished groundwater reserves, allowing bud break to occur early. The warm, wet spring was record-breaking for high temperatures and rainfall, which in turn stimulated intense growth, good foliage development and early flowering. The typically Mediterranean summer, was hot and dry which allowed the vines to mature and the fruit was harvested under good conditions.
Vineyard - The Picpoul de Pinet appellation overlooks the idyllic Thau Lagoon and its oyster huts. Here, the culture of the vine is paramount, and some plots of land have maintained their size and position since ancient times. Piquepoul Blanc is a fresh, zippy variety that is responsible for the Picpoul de Pinet wines that have helped to put this flourishing French region on the map. The terroir is made up of clay-limestone plateaus, rich in Cretaceous limestone and laden with quartz pebbles. The vineyards are dominated to the north by limestone hills dating from the Jurassic period. The Ormarine vineyards are cultivated using sustainable practices known in French as ‘la lutte raisonnée’ and since 2018, the winery has been certified by Terra Vitis. The use of sexual confusion of predators is used to limit phytosanitary treatments. . The vineyard is located on the edge of Étang de Thau, which is a Natura 2000 zone - a protected ecological site.
Winemaking - At the end of the pressing process, the ‘coarse lees’ were separated from the clear juice, filtered and vinified separately. They were then reincorporated if their aromatic quality was deemed to be interesting. The wine remained on its lees until the following spring, with regular stirring to impart aromatic complexity and richness to the palate.
Tasting Note - A refreshing and expressive Picpoul, with floral nuances, stone fruits and zesty citrus notes through to a long, delicious and mouthwatering finish.
