Poderi Parpinello Vermentino Ala Bianca 2020
The Vermentino Ala Bianca from Poderi Parpinello is a white wine which is full of flavour of ripe tropical fruit, lime and pineapple coulis with a spicy finish.
Producer Note - The Parpinello family have run this 30 hectare estate and winery with dedication and passion for three generations. Giampaolo Parpinello and his son Paolo strive to reflect the Sardinian terroir and reveal the typicity of the wines. The vineyard is situated on a gentle slope between Alghero and Sassari in the north west of the island. In order to reflect this typicity, modern winemaking technology is successfully combined with traditional farming methods, resulting in high quality wines with intense aromas and flavours, evocative of the terroir from which they originate.
Vintage - The 2017 vintage was characterised by a hot summer with little rainfall. This resulted in reduced yields but the grapes were harvested in an excellent, healthy condition and delivered rich varietal flavours.
Vineyard - Ala Blanca means white wing in Italian. "Here come the white wings" the children would cry as they watched the seagulls fly over the vineyard. Vermentino is the main white grape cultivated in Sardinia. It is presumed to have Spanish origins, but has found its ideal setting in the north of Sardinia, where it can fully express its unique characteristics, delicacy and Mediterranean hints. The vineyard is located on gentle slopes between Alghero and Sassari, where the vines are planted at a high density in a mixture of geological formations such as calcareous marne, conglomerate and sandstone. The vineyard is cultivated respecting tradition and the ecosystem of its location.
Winemaking - The grapes underwent short pre-fermentation maceration. Fermentation took place at low temperatures in stainless steel tanks to preserve the purity of fruit and lasted 15 days. The wine was aged in stainless steel tanks for three months. No oak was used during vinification in order to preserve the varietal characteristics of the Vermentino grape and to express the elements of terroir from which this wine hails.
Tasting Note - Elegant and fine aromas of ripe tropical fruits, mineral notes and an intriguing hint of bitter almonds on the finish.
Serving Suggestion - Perfect as an apéritif, but also an ideal and elegant accompaniment to fish dishes, seafood and white meat served in a creamy sauce.
