San Marzano 62 Anniversario Primitivo Di Manduria Riserva 2018

As featured on The Wine Show with Joe Fattorini 04/04/2020.

This is quite simply one of the best red wines we've tasted from southern Italy for years or, for that matter, from the whole Mediterranean. The 62 Anniversario Primitivo by San Marzano is a wine of real calibre, combining vibrancy and purity of fruit with subtle, vanilla-flecked oak and the warm tobacco, prune-like flavours of long maturation. It's a full-bodied wine with plenty of kick, but there's a freshness to the acidity that brings it alive in the mouth. A stunning wine from one of the best producers in Puglia.

Drink with fiery tomato dishes, hearty stews or smoky grilled vegetables or red meat such as steak or game, or a stew with a red wine base. It's good now but may well improve over the next five or so years.

The grapes were harvested slightly later than usual, promoting bold, riper fruit flavours. After fermentation, the wine was matured in a combination of French and American oak for 18 months. No animal-based fining agents or winery aids were used during the vinification.

The 62 Anniversario Primitivo di Manduria from Cantine San Marzano is dry, deep, and full-bodied, red wine crafted from hand-picked grapes in vineyards bordered on either side by the Ionian and the Adriatic seas in the Puglia red wine region of Italy. The 2012 San Marzano 62 Anniversario Primitivo won a gold medal at the 2015 Sommelier Wine Awards, while the 62 Anniversario Primitivo di Manduria Riserva 2011 won a silver medal in the 2014 Sommelier Wine Awards. The wine has also won the bronze medal in the 2015 Decanter World Wine Awards, so it has quite a pedigree!

Producer Note - In 1962, 19 vine growers from San Marzano whose families had farmed the land for generations, combined their efforts to establish 'Cantine San Marzano'. Through the decades this cooperative has grown significantly, attracting over 1,200 vine growers. Using modern and technologically advanced vinification techniques they produce elegant wines that pay homage to the ancient Apulian wine traditions. The fusion of time-honoured tradition, passion and contemporary techniques, enables this winery to produce wines with distinctive varietal and regional characteristics while reflecting the local terroir. In 2021, San Marzano was awarded the ‘Cooperative Winery of the Year Award’ by Gambero Rosso.

Vintage -  A mild winter was followed by a warm spring. Summer was humid and rainy, consequently, harvesting took place one week earlier than average to preserve the quality of the grapes. A careful selection was made in the vineyard resulting in reduced yields but maintaining the high quality of fruit. The 2018 wines are lower in alcohol, slightly higher in acidity and show very intense aromatics and flavours.

Vineyard - The grapes come from the central area of D.O.P. "Primitivo di Manduria", where they are grown in very old vineyards in San Marzano and Sava. They are planted at a density of 5,000 bush vines per hectare. The soil is mainly red with a fine texture and is generally calcareous with few emerging rocks. The renowned red hue of the soils is due to the presence of iron oxides. The climate is characterised by high temperatures all year round, very little rainfall and a wide diurnal temperature range, which has a positive influence on the quality of the grapes, concentrating the flavours in the berries. The harvest takes place during the second half of September.

Winemaking - Only the best fruit, from the best plots was selected to produce this wine. The grapes were hand-harvested once they had reached an advanced state of ripening. Temperature-controlled fermentation took place at 24 to 26°C and lasted for approximately 15 days. The wine went through malolactic conversion in stainless steel vats before being racked into French and American oak barrels, where it matured for 18 months.

Tasting Notes

The 62 Anniversario Primitivo is a dry red wine with 14.5% alcohol, which is a touch on the higher side but an expected characteristic of wines made from the Zinfandel grape variety. The fine tannins and a hint of spice make it very enjoyable to drink. Flavours of black cherry, jam, prunes, tobacco, and liquorice can be noted at the first sip, trailed by hints of cocoa, vanilla, and coffee. Its velvety texture combined with a long, lingering finish makes it a delicious red wine alone or with a meal.

Serving suggestion - This Puglia red wine can be enjoyed alone or with various savoury dishes. Allow it to age for up to seven years for matured flavours. Serve slightly below room temperature at 18°C to fully enjoy the experience. Pair with red meat such as steak or game, or a stew with a red wine base.

Can you explain your shipping charges?

We charge the amount the courier charges us to deliver the wines. In the majority of cases this is £10.00 for a dozen wines. For local delivery we charge £5.00 as we can often do this ourselves, by local we mean Milton Keynes.

Couriers charge by weight and size and a case of wines is both heavy and bulky and so the costs are fairly high. The charges are the same if you are buying 1 bottle or 6 bottles but they change if you go over 6 bottles due the the excess weight and size. Couriers also charge a fee to cover fuel excess and this all goes towards the total cost not to mention the 20% VAT to be added to everything.

Currently if someone orders a dozen wines they are charged £10.00 but if they order 24 bottles the charge is the same!

If you wish to have your wines shipped to other countries the costs are extreemly high and often not worth paying for. The cost for example to ship to the USA for a dozen wines would be £100.00 for the shipping alone! Therefore we have taken the decision not to ship any wines outside of the UK.

What is your minimum order?

The minimum order is 1 bottle! I prefer it if people order more and you get better value with the delivery if you do this too!

What if I want to send wine as a gift?

No problem, we will send to your preferred address and even include a card free of charge!

We have two kinds of cards a blank one and a Thank you one. However if you want a Valentines one or a birthday card or anyother type of card please let us know. We will write your personal greeting and even include the soppy stuff. We don't charge for the cards as its our way of thanking you for choosing us to send a gift to your loved one.

What about a discount?

I may be able to take a little off the price if you ask nicely and there is a large enough order. Please do not ask for a discount on any orders under 12 bottles.  Email me with your requirements and I will let you know if I can do anything. However the best way to get a discount is to sign up for the newsletter as there is often special offers given away to newsletter subscribers.
