Santa Maria La Nave Etna Rosso Calmarossa 2017

The Etna Rosso Calmarossa from Santa Maria La Nave Wines has an enticing nose of red fruits, vanilla and a touch of cinnamon, leading to a refined structure on the palate and a wonderfully persistent finish.

Producer Note - This small, authentic boutique winery on Mount Etna, was established by Giuseppe "Peppino" Mulone in 1954. Santa Maria la Nave grows indigenous varieties such as Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio in an ancient vineyard with rich, fertile volcanic soils. Passion and respect for the unique microclimate, along with artisanal vinification are at the heart of the Santa Maria La Nave project. Produced in small quantities, from dramatic surroundings, these are exquisite, food-friendly wines.

Vintage - The 2014 vintage in Italy was very difficult, as much of the country endured flooding. However, despite the abundant rains, the volcanic soil (which absorbs excessive water), the constant winds and strong sun-protected the grapes grown on Mount Etna. This unique site has once again produced grapes in perfect condition.

Vineyard - The vineyard lies on the south eastern slopes of Mount Etna, on an ancient vineyard site with a pre-phylloxera heart on the steep slope of an old crater. Planted at approximately 8,000 plants per hectare, in the traditional “alberello Etneo' bush method, the vines produce a very limited yield. The climate is humid, with significant rainfall during winter and spring and strong temperature fluctuations. The soils are black volcanic sands and rich in minerals. The vineyard is maintained with the utmost respect for the environment, without the use of pesticides and is in conversion to organic status.

Winemaking - The crushed skins and must were put into stainless steel fermenters. Selected local yeasts were added and the temperature was increased to 26°C for the maceration process, with daily pumpovers. After 21 days of fermentation the lees were drawn off, the wine was racked and underwent a malolactic fermentation at 18°C. This reduced the total acidity and imparted a softer mouthfeel to the wine. 40% of the wine was then racked into French oak barriques where it was aged for 12 months, the remainder was aged in stainless steel vats, before blending. The wine was racked, clarified, filtered and stabilised, prior to bottling.

Tasting Note - An enticing nose of wild red fruits and vanilla, which are complemented by a touch of cinnamon. A refined structure on the palate with elegant tannins and a harmonious, lingering finish.

Serving Suggestion - Perfect with oysters, fried fish or pasta with anchovies, due to its incredible minerality and fine tannins.

Can you explain your shipping charges?

We charge the amount the courier charges us to deliver the wines. In the majority of cases this is £10.00 for a dozen wines. For local delivery we charge £5.00 as we can often do this ourselves, by local we mean Milton Keynes.

Couriers charge by weight and size and a case of wines is both heavy and bulky and so the costs are fairly high. The charges are the same if you are buying 1 bottle or 6 bottles but they change if you go over 6 bottles due the the excess weight and size. Couriers also charge a fee to cover fuel excess and this all goes towards the total cost not to mention the 20% VAT to be added to everything.

Currently if someone orders a dozen wines they are charged £10.00 but if they order 24 bottles the charge is the same!

If you wish to have your wines shipped to other countries the costs are extreemly high and often not worth paying for. The cost for example to ship to the USA for a dozen wines would be £100.00 for the shipping alone! Therefore we have taken the decision not to ship any wines outside of the UK.

What is your minimum order?

The minimum order is 1 bottle! I prefer it if people order more and you get better value with the delivery if you do this too!

What if I want to send wine as a gift?

No problem, we will send to your preferred address and even include a card free of charge!

We have two kinds of cards a blank one and a Thank you one. However if you want a Valentines one or a birthday card or anyother type of card please let us know. We will write your personal greeting and even include the soppy stuff. We don't charge for the cards as its our way of thanking you for choosing us to send a gift to your loved one.

What about a discount?

I may be able to take a little off the price if you ask nicely and there is a large enough order. Please do not ask for a discount on any orders under 12 bottles.  Email me with your requirements and I will let you know if I can do anything. However the best way to get a discount is to sign up for the newsletter as there is often special offers given away to newsletter subscribers.
