Santa Maria La Nave Sicilia Bianco Millesulmare 2014

The Millesulmare Bianco from Santa Maria La Nave has delicious volcanic minerality, wild mountain fruits and a hint of pineapple, this is an elegant and vibrant wine.

Producer Note - This small, authentic boutique winery on Mount Etna, was established by Giuseppe "Peppino" Mulone in 1954. Santa Maria la Nave grows indigenous varieties such as Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio in an ancient vineyard with rich, fertile volcanic soils. Passion and respect for the unique microclimate, along with artisanal vinification are at the heart of the Santa Maria La Nave project. Produced in small quantities, from dramatic surroundings, these are exquisite, food friendly wines.

Vintage - The 2014 vintage in Italy was very difficult, as much of the country endured flooding. However, despite the abundant rains which were especially heavy during the initial part of the season, the volcanic soil (which absorbs excessive water), the constant winds and the strong sun protected the grapes grown in the Santa Maria vineyard. This unique site has once again produced grapes in perfect condition.

Vineyard - The vineyard is situated on the northwestern slopes of Mount Etna, at an altitude of 1,100 metres - one of the highest vineyards in Europe. Following a 15 year massal selection of local plants, the Grecanico Dorato vines planted are from several ancient clones grafted on Richter 110 and Paulsen 1103 rootstocks. The climate provides warm, dry days during the summer, with strong temperature fluctuations during the ripening period. The highly organic soil has significant residues of old lave flow, imparting a marked minerality in the final wine. The vines are predominantly trained on the Guyot trellising system. The vines are farmed using organic principles, without the use of pesticides and are manually harvested. The vineyard is in conversion to organic status and will be certified from the January vintage.

Winemaking - The grapes were destalked and gently pressed, obtaining 60% of free run juice. The must was cold settled at 10°C for 36 hours prior to being inoculated with strictly local yeasts. Alcoholic fermentation took place at 18 to 20°C, in order to preserve the aromatic content of the must. The wine was then racked, followed by a weekly stirring of the lees. The cool temperatures stabilised the tartaric acid, making the final wine less acidic and softer on the palate. After a gentle clarification and filtration, the wine was bottled and aged for a further six months.

Tasting Note - A bright and fine example of Grecanico Dorato, with a distinctive minerality combined with wild mountain fruits, citrus characters and a hint of pineapple. Dry, with a balanced acidity, this elegant and harmonious wine has a lovely lingering finish.

Serving Suggestion - The perfect pairing with all seafood dishes, sushi and sashimi, pasta with clams, risotto or delicate vegetable dishes.

Grape - Grecanico Dorato 100%

Can you explain your shipping charges?

We charge the amount the courier charges us to deliver the wines. In the majority of cases this is £10.00 for a dozen wines. For local delivery we charge £5.00 as we can often do this ourselves, by local we mean Milton Keynes.

Couriers charge by weight and size and a case of wines is both heavy and bulky and so the costs are fairly high. The charges are the same if you are buying 1 bottle or 6 bottles but they change if you go over 6 bottles due the the excess weight and size. Couriers also charge a fee to cover fuel excess and this all goes towards the total cost not to mention the 20% VAT to be added to everything.

Currently if someone orders a dozen wines they are charged £10.00 but if they order 24 bottles the charge is the same!

If you wish to have your wines shipped to other countries the costs are extreemly high and often not worth paying for. The cost for example to ship to the USA for a dozen wines would be £100.00 for the shipping alone! Therefore we have taken the decision not to ship any wines outside of the UK.

What is your minimum order?

The minimum order is 1 bottle! I prefer it if people order more and you get better value with the delivery if you do this too!

What if I want to send wine as a gift?

No problem, we will send to your preferred address and even include a card free of charge!

We have two kinds of cards a blank one and a Thank you one. However if you want a Valentines one or a birthday card or anyother type of card please let us know. We will write your personal greeting and even include the soppy stuff. We don't charge for the cards as its our way of thanking you for choosing us to send a gift to your loved one.

What about a discount?

I may be able to take a little off the price if you ask nicely and there is a large enough order. Please do not ask for a discount on any orders under 12 bottles.  Email me with your requirements and I will let you know if I can do anything. However the best way to get a discount is to sign up for the newsletter as there is often special offers given away to newsletter subscribers.
