Santo Isidro Pegões Colheita Seleccionada Adega De Pegoes White 2019
The Colheita Seleccionada white from Adega de Pegões has to be one of the best value white wines to come from Portugal. It has superb flavours and a creamy texture in the mouth that make it a great choice to match full flavoured foods that command white wine. It has a delicious oak characteristic that comes from the fermentaion in American oak casks and this adds superb complexity to the wine.
Winery Information
Santo Isidro de Pegões is one of the most forward thinking co-operatives in Portugal and their chief winemaker, Jaime Quendera, skillfully blends the warm native varities of Castelao, Tourgia Nacional and Trincadeira with international grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah to produce wines bursting with flavour. Founded in 1958 in the small village of Pegões the winery has access to a total of 1,100 hectares owned by 140 winegrowers. It boasts the most up to date equipment including over 90 stainless steel vats and 1,600 oak barrels. It produces a variety of wines - Terras do Sado regional wines, DOC wines and most recently the famous local dessert wine, Moscatel de Setubal. Each year all of the production is bottled and sold with 80% destined for the domestic market and 20% for export.
Vinification
The vines are harvested at the end of August. The grapes undergo a short skin maceration followed by fermentation in American oak barrels. The wine is then aged for 4 months in oak barrels with batonage followed by 6 months to 1 year in bottle prior to release.
