The first wine from Australia is the Fox Gordon Nero D'Avola. This is an Italian grape variety that thrives in certain parts of Australia and in the hands of brilliant growers like Fox Gordon it really shines. Rich and yet subtle its intense fruitiness always delivers pleasure.
We follow that with the Foundstone Merlot from Berton Vineyards, this soft and supple red wine is sure to delight. It's got all the plum characters you would want but with a hint of blackcurrant and elegant tannins.
The Fontana Syrah/Grenache blend from Spain shows how a spicy wine can also be smooth and lovely when made well. The Syrah delivers the peppery kick while the Grenache softens that kick into a nudge and add its own level of supple fruit complexity.
Carminucci wines from Italy have surpassed any expectations with the phenomenal Rosso Piceno. This wine blew me away recently and I knew I had to include it in this case. This wine epitomises soft and silky wine and the mouthfeel is very moorish.
Italy features again in this case with the lovely Il Pumo Negroamaro from the fabulous San Marzano cooperative in Puglia. This grape variety is often overshadowed by the Primitivo from this area but this is why it's so good. Primitivo is often a fruit bomb with lots of alcohol whereas Negroamaro is much more subtle and sophisticated.
Sibaris Reserve Pinot Noir from Chile delivers intense cherry flavours wrapped in mid-level tannins and the subtlest of farmyard characters that make Chilean Pinot so great.
