Goring Estate Sparkling Brut NV

The Wiston Estate Goring Estate Brut is an elegant, complex English sparkling wine combining a youthful purity of fruit with subtle toasty, nutty notes.

Producer Note - Dermot Sugrue is not exactly a new name in the English wine industry but he is certainly a winemaker at the top of his game. Born in Ireland in 1974, he studied Viticulture and Oenology at Plumpton Agricultural College before completing two seasons working at Château l'Eglise-Clinet and Château Leoville-Barton. In 2003 he joined Nyetimber and was appointed winemaker in 2004. Over the following years he oversaw Nyetimber's emergence as one of the world's greatest sparkling wine producers. From Nyetimber he moved to the beautiful, family-run Wiston Estate in 2006, nestled in the heart of England's rolling South Downs in West Sussex, to work with the Goring Family who has owned the estate since 1743. The Goring Brut and Goring Rosé are made exclusively for us by Dermot Sugrue and take their name from the Goring family.

Vineyard - The fruit comes from two estate vineyards situated on the South Downs in West Sussex, which are above the 50th parallel and are influenced by a cool, coastal climate. The cool winters, moderate rainfall and temperate summers, combined with cooling sea breezes encourage the grapes to ripen slowly, retaining the natural acidity crucial for producing freshness in high quality sparkling wine. The vines are grown on a chalk escarpment, which is not dissimilar to the soils found in the vineyards of the Côtes de Blancs in Champagne. These chalky soils provide excellent drainage for the vines, as well as imparting great elegance and finesse to the wines. The vines are planted at a density of 4,000 vines per hectare and are trained according to the Vertical Shoot Positioning (VSP) method, with Guyot pruning. The vines are tended by hand, with careful canopy management ensuring maximum sunlight exposure in this capricious climate. The Wiston vineyard is run according to a strict philosophy of sustainability, with soil cultivation methods being used rather than synthetic preparations. The harvest takes place manually when the grapes have reached optimum maturity levels.

Winemaking - Vinified using the Traditional Method. Made with equal parts Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, which were each pressed separately in whole bunches using a traditional Coquard basket press which is unique to the UK. The juice was then fermented entirely in stainless steel tanks. Each component of the final assemblage wine went through malolactic fermentation and was allowed to rest on its lees prior to bottling. The second fermentation took place in the bottle, maturing on its fine lees in cellar for an average of three years, before disgorging at seven grams per litre.

Tasting Note - An elegant, complex English sparkling wine combining a youthful purity of fruit with subtle toasty, nutty notes.

Serving Suggestion - A refined and elegant apéritif, which also accompanies fish dishes and fresh seafood.

Can you explain your shipping charges?

We charge the amount the courier charges us to deliver the wines. In the majority of cases this is £10.00 for a dozen wines. For local delivery we charge £5.00 as we can often do this ourselves, by local we mean Milton Keynes.

Couriers charge by weight and size and a case of wines is both heavy and bulky and so the costs are fairly high. The charges are the same if you are buying 1 bottle or 6 bottles but they change if you go over 6 bottles due the the excess weight and size. Couriers also charge a fee to cover fuel excess and this all goes towards the total cost not to mention the 20% VAT to be added to everything.

Currently if someone orders a dozen wines they are charged £10.00 but if they order 24 bottles the charge is the same!

If you wish to have your wines shipped to other countries the costs are extreemly high and often not worth paying for. The cost for example to ship to the USA for a dozen wines would be £100.00 for the shipping alone! Therefore we have taken the decision not to ship any wines outside of the UK.

What is your minimum order?

The minimum order is 1 bottle! I prefer it if people order more and you get better value with the delivery if you do this too!

What if I want to send wine as a gift?

No problem, we will send to your preferred address and even include a card free of charge!

We have two kinds of cards a blank one and a Thank you one. However if you want a Valentines one or a birthday card or anyother type of card please let us know. We will write your personal greeting and even include the soppy stuff. We don't charge for the cards as its our way of thanking you for choosing us to send a gift to your loved one.

What about a discount?

I may be able to take a little off the price if you ask nicely and there is a large enough order. Please do not ask for a discount on any orders under 12 bottles.  Email me with your requirements and I will let you know if I can do anything. However the best way to get a discount is to sign up for the newsletter as there is often special offers given away to newsletter subscribers.
