Swartland Winery Winemaker's Collection Syrah 2018
The Swartland Winery produces this 100% Syrah in a superb style. It's got all the characteristic peppery and blackcurranty notes you would expect but it's really soft in tannins which is quite rare for a high alcohol Syrah. This is a red wine that is best drunk with red meat but if you like the fuller style of Shiraz or Syrah then with a little breathing the Winemakers Collection Syrah is delightful.
Big open skies, arid deserts, the vast flowing landscape, with its unforgiving climate and rugged bush vines, this is wild country, this is Swartland. The contrast with manicured Constantia and oh-so-cool Stellenbosch couldn't be greater. But right now, Swartland is the most exciting wine region in South Africa. A new wave of winemakers are making ground-breaking wines from Rhône varietals and it is part of a revolution that has got everybody talking. The Swartland Winery is producing iconic and award winning wines in this fashionable and dynamic region. We think something this good, is definitely worth talking about!
Swartland Winery was established in 1948 near Cape Town, South Africa as a cooperative cellar. It now operates as a full-fledged wine company with its own production and bottling facilities. Wheat and grapes grow by the hectare throughout the region, with Swartland Winery producing from 3,600 hectares of vines from a 22km radius of surrounding farmland. The winery produces about 2 million 9 litre cases of wine a year, and its wines have been winning many awards in the past few years as their international acclaim rises. This region, with its hot, dry weather and bright blue skies, has proven to be an amazing place for growing bush wines. Since the 1990s, more red grape varieties have been planted than ever before, so South African red wine has become a more popular option on the market. Swartland red wine is exemplified in their Winemakers Collection, though they also produce a range of white, sparkling, and fortified wines.
The 2014 vintage in Swartland was challenging, it was a very wet winter in 2013 which followed through into the early growing season, so yields and canopy sizes were up. The growing season was predominantly cool and coupled with the higher crop yield, the harvest started a couple of weeks later than usual, but with amazing acidity levels. A heat-wave hit the region just as harvesting started, so the producers worked flat out to get everything in on time. The incredible acidities of the grapes picked early, compared to those picked later, with slightly lower levels, meant it was a year for blending to achieve the perfect balance.
Aromas of juicy blackcurrant, plum and layers of soft spice on the nose, while ripe, dark fruit complement this full bodied wine with soft smooth tannins. White pepper and spice envelope the elegant finish.
Delicious with red meats and stews; or a rich risotto dish.
