Xose Lois Sebio Coios Bierzo 2015

The Coios from Xosé Lois Sebio is a vibrant and aromatic example of Mencia, with floral notes, fresh red fruits and coffee and mineral notes leading to a robust and textured palate.

Producer Note - Winemaker Xosé Lois Sebio has produced this stunning eponymous collection of wines as a result of a personal quest: to find wines with unique personality from more risky processing zones and with a very marked identity. This original and quirky range is made from high quality grapes in areas which are often neglected or simply different; vineyards that are difficult to farm due to the high costs of conventional viticulture. Away from fashions and conventions, the sole intention is to respect and express the soil, variety and area; producing wines with soul and personality. The wines are vinified with minimal intervention and low sulphur. These are collectable wines for lovers of the authentic and different.

Vintage - 2015 was an almost perfect vintage. A cold winter, mild spring and a summer with abundant sunshine and little rainfall, resulted in grapes with optimum phenological maturity. The balance between the maturity and freshness found in the grapes was impeccable. The vines were harvested in perfect health and the resulting wines are capable of great ageing.

Vineyard - The grapes come from a single vineyard 'Viñas O Val' in the DO Bierzo, in the north western Spanish province of Castilla León. Low yielding 60 year old vines are grown in clay soils with 'Coios', a Spanish term for boulders, which gave this wine its name. These old vines have deep root systems which nourish the vines imparting complex flavours in the resulting wine. Planted at a density of 4,000 vines per hectare, the vines are grown at an altitude of 550 to 590 metres above sea level. The cool nights extends the ripening period, allowing the grapes to develop rich varietal characteristics while retaining balancing acidity. The grapes are manually harvested when they have reached optimum maturity.

Winemaking - Vinification took place in open tanks of 1,500 litres. A cold soak lasted one week, prior to fermentation at low temperatures. The wine was gently pressed in a manual screw press. Only the lots with the sweetest, ripest tannins and fruit forward flavours were extracted. The wine started malolactic fermentation in tank, which was completed in 600 litre barrels. The blend was aged for 14 months in 300 and 600 litre barrels of third fill.

Tasting Note - A vibrant Mencia, with aromatic notes of lilac, violet, fresh red fruits interlaced with mineral overtones. Harmoniously balanced, with restrained tannins and a textured palate, full of fleshy red fruits and a savoury character on the long, intense finish.

Serving Suggestion - Lamb cutlets with seasoned vegetables, or steak au poivre.

Can you explain your shipping charges?

We charge the amount the courier charges us to deliver the wines. In the majority of cases this is £10.00 for a dozen wines. For local delivery we charge £5.00 as we can often do this ourselves, by local we mean Milton Keynes.

Couriers charge by weight and size and a case of wines is both heavy and bulky and so the costs are fairly high. The charges are the same if you are buying 1 bottle or 6 bottles but they change if you go over 6 bottles due the the excess weight and size. Couriers also charge a fee to cover fuel excess and this all goes towards the total cost not to mention the 20% VAT to be added to everything.

Currently if someone orders a dozen wines they are charged £10.00 but if they order 24 bottles the charge is the same!

If you wish to have your wines shipped to other countries the costs are extreemly high and often not worth paying for. The cost for example to ship to the USA for a dozen wines would be £100.00 for the shipping alone! Therefore we have taken the decision not to ship any wines outside of the UK.

What is your minimum order?

The minimum order is 1 bottle! I prefer it if people order more and you get better value with the delivery if you do this too!

What if I want to send wine as a gift?

No problem, we will send to your preferred address and even include a card free of charge!

We have two kinds of cards a blank one and a Thank you one. However if you want a Valentines one or a birthday card or anyother type of card please let us know. We will write your personal greeting and even include the soppy stuff. We don't charge for the cards as its our way of thanking you for choosing us to send a gift to your loved one.

What about a discount?

I may be able to take a little off the price if you ask nicely and there is a large enough order. Please do not ask for a discount on any orders under 12 bottles.  Email me with your requirements and I will let you know if I can do anything. However the best way to get a discount is to sign up for the newsletter as there is often special offers given away to newsletter subscribers.
